Located in Pokolbin, the heart of Hunter Valley Wine Country, Ballabourneen’s boutique cellar door offers premium Hunter wines made with passion and care by Dan Binet, one of the Hunter’s new generation of winemakers. Ballabourneen vineyards are located in two main areas in the Lower Hunter, Lovedale and Pokolbin. Ballabourneen also sources small parcels of fruit from other wine regions in Australia for exclusive members’ own bottlings.
One of the great wines that Ballabourneen produces is their Chambourcin. Chambourcin is noted for its distinctive dark colouring and herbaceous aroma. Chambourcin wines are often spicy, with black cherry and plum flavors, and a range of herbal characters. The variety is especially resistant to fungal diseases and is most at home in the more humid regions of coastal NSW, including the Hunter Valley. John Cassegrain in the Hastings River Wine Region is credited with pioneering this variety in Australia.
The Ballabourneen Chambourcin 2015 is an intensely purple-ruby hued wine. It shows a varietal mix of earth, smoke, beetroot, bramble and sandalwood with plums and Christmas cake aromas. Vibrant and juicy with a fresh core of dark cherry, earth, beetroot and sweet raspberry. Almost Pinot Noir like structure with a velvety finish.
Match with duck pork, pizza or pasta. Cellar until 2019 – 2020.
