The effects of a ‘non summer’ across New South Wales led to a very late start to the Hunter Valley vintage. At Briar Ridge, their first Semillon’s were picked at the beginning of February – almost two weeks later than usual, with the cool conditions providing crisp and vibrant white wines with lovely natural acidity. The harvest rain proved to be challenging for the reds.
After crushing and destemming the must was chilled to 12ºC. The free run juice was kept separate from the pressings juice, then cold settled. Once settled the clear juice was racked and inoculated with a selected white wine yeast and fermented at 12-15ºC for 15 days. At the completion of the alcoholic fermentation the wine was racked off yeast deposits, stabilised, fined and filtered for bottling.
I have created my Stockhausen Semillon in the traditional style that has made the Hunter Valley famous. – Karl Stockhausen
Briar Ridge Semillon is grown on well-drained sandy loam soils located in the heart of Hunter Valley wine country. The vineyard has drip irrigation installed on each vine row to ensure vine health and consistency of quality. The crop yields are relatively low, producing excellent concentration of fruit flavour.
The wine shows brilliant pale straw colour with green tinged hues. This wine displays a wonderfully lifted lemon citrus bouquet with a crisp but delicate acid structure. The finish is persistant with lingering lime zest characters adding great length to the wine.
