Calais Estate boasts one of the largest collections of boutique wines in the Hunter Valley, a remarkable accomplishment for a small family run winery.
With 20 acres of working vineyards on the estate, Calais also sources superior parcels of fruit from selected vineyards around the country. The Calais Range includes wines of the more traditional styles including Shiraz, Semillon, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Pinot Noir, as well as more rare varietals such as Chambourcin, Vioginer and Petit Verdot, not often found in the Hunter Valley.
During Vintage, between the end of January and early March, the grapes are harvested to the Estate’s Winery, where they are nurtured from juice to the bottle by Calais’ Winemakers.
The Verdelho grape originates from Portugal although performs well in a range of climates. The Hunter Valley has embraced the production of this wine in the last decade and has been producing Verdelho with elegance with regional spice characters in a range of styles. Generally if the variety is picked early it will exhibit citrus, herbaceous elements, if picked late, rich fruit flavours will dominate.
Calais Estate’s Verdelho is picked at optimal ripeness, it is then treated to stainless steel fermentation to ensure a fresh and lively wine with an intensity of tropical, floral and herbaceous aromas. Pineapple, melon and passionfruit dominate the palate with a crisp, zippy freshness to finish.
A bright and lively wine showing a rich spiciness both on the nose and the palate. The nose is herbaceous whilst the palate is crisp and well balanced. Best consumed while in its youth. Enjoy its freshness and vibrancy.
