Petersons is a family owned and operated winery, which has been growing grapes for 37 years and making wines for 27 years. Nestled in the hills of Mount View in the Hunter Valley, the backdrop is stunning – and only a short drive from the main areas of the Hunter.
Ian and Shirley Peterson were among the early followers in the footsteps of Max Lake, contributing to the Hunter Valley renaissance which has continued to this day. Grapegrowers since 1971 and winemakers since 1981, the second generation of the family, headed by Colin Peterson, now manages the business. It has been significantly expanded to include 16ha at Mount View, a 42ha vineyard in Mudgee (Glenesk), and an 8ha vineyard near Armidale (Palmerston), each with its own cellar door.
Ian Peterson, a pharmacist, his wife Shirley and son Colin purchased an old dairy farm known as Glenesk at Mount View in 1964, with the intention of raising beef cattle. In 1971 ten acres of Semillon were planted to supply McWilliam’s winery. This was to be the commencement of a very successful vineyard on the rich soils of Mount View in the Lower Hunter Valley.
In 1980 thirty acres of vines had been planted, consisting of Semillon, Chardonnay, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir. In 1981 the decision was made to produce two wines, Chardonnay and Shiraz. The first release of wines also brought their first medal. The vineyard has since been planted out to 40 acres with new plantings of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Viognier. In 2001 Peterson’s established a new winery aimed at small batch wine production while maintaining the superior quality for which Peterson’s are renowned.
The 2011 Hunter Valley “Back Block” Shiraz is deep black plum in colour with a magenta hue. This wonderful wine has lifted aromas of mulberry, sweet blackberry pie followed by plum jam, star anise, cloves and nutmeg, cinnamon and a hint of white pepper. The palate has ripe plum and cherry fruit flavours along with hints of cinnamon, pepper and cloves. The tannins are very refined and well balanced between fruit acid and tannin, which makes this wine long, elegant and seamless.
The “Back Block” Shiraz is only produced in the very best years with exceptional fruit from a single parcel of vines located in front of our cellar door at Mount View. To get the best out if this wine it should be cellared carefully for up to 10 years and enjoyed on a special occasion with your favourite red meat dish.
